Some of theactivities of the disability rights movementsare outlined and significantachievements at the international levelthrough the United Nations are examined.Similar to the women's humanrights movement, disability rights arealso emerging from the margins towardsthe mainstream of human rightsdiscourse. Canada's legislation andpolicies towards persons with disabilitieshave mirrored these developmentsin providing protection. However, forrefugees with disabilities the benefitsseem minimal. In fact, while proclaiming the rhetoricof disability rights to itsown citizens, Canada has implementedpolicies which are discriminatory towardsrefugees with disabilities. Canada'soverseas resettlement selectioncriteria is at odds with its domestic andinternational positions regarding thehuman rights of persons with disabilities. ER -
