For the past three decades, the debate on sustainable development has been characterized by a narrow focus on development and environmental policy, leaving plenty of room for interpretation. These interpretations do not often correspond to those of those who use market forces and multinationals to better actualize development. Rather, they stem from theories that believe in a fundamental reconceptualization of the economy and the environment for real change to occur. This article takes a theoretical approach to analyzing economic growth and the complexity of the notion of sustainable development.
